What is Municipal Solid Waste?

Municipal waste extends to any item that local citizens throw away in their garbage cans at home, work, or even school. Common types of waste that can be found in municipal landfills—include food, plastics, batteries, packaging, and bottles. Landfills also take in larger items, such as used furniture and broken appliances.

The Promontory Point landfill has opened for business receiving state permit approval.

While environmentalists are concerned about the health of the bordering Great Salt Lake, Weber County officials have vested interest in securing this landfill to reduce their taxpayers’ costs. The company that owns the Promontory Point landfill has met state regulations for waste; to additionally ensure that the landfill meets regulatory criteria, they conducted site assessment for a groundwater plan tailored to the needs of the area.

This municipal landfill is seeking to expand in the future with a Class V permit. A Class V permit would allow the site to “take commercial and out-of-state waste,” making this 2,000-acre landfill one of largest in the nation for industrial usage, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

However, at this time, the cape of Promontory Point will be receiving only local county waste.
